Swiss keyboardist Oli Kuster and UK saxophonist Dee Byrne have a long history of creative partnership, from their work in the UK/Swiss ensemble MoonMot to their trio project Motherboard Pinball. Their new duo project DOX takes that collaboration in a striking new direction, fusing modular electronics, saxophone and improvisation into fractured ambient landscapes and glitch-infused grooves.
The duo’s new album, Drowned Circuits (Efpi Records, November 2025), features Kuster and Byrne joined by Berlin-based Swiss drummer Xavier Kaeser, whose kinetic energy adds a sharp edge to the duo’s immersive soundworld.
Born out of Kuster’s pandemic-era experiments with modular synths, DOX expands into a restless, atmospheric music that thrives on unpredictability. Textural depth, dissonance and electronic pulses meet Byrne’s incisive improvisation, creating a sound that is at once abstract and visceral.
DOX is both a continuation of Kuster and Byrne’s shared curiosity and the beginning of a new chapter – a flexible platform for collaborations that challenge the boundaries between jazz, improvisation and electronic music.
‘The trio of saxophonist Dee Byrne, synthesizer player Oli Kuster, and drummer Xavier Kaeser apply an avant-garde ethos to a modern post-post-bop sound.’ Dave Sumner, Best Jazz on Bandcamp Nov 2025 [full review]
‘Seven pieces of improvised music that are both adventurous and accessible, the balance between improvisation and structure continues to fascinate.’ The Jazz Mann ★★★★ [full review]
‘… intense, risk-taking, unpredictable, and restless, attempting to bring modern jazz back to the dance floors. It demands a full surrender, and clearly blurs the distinction between jazz, free improvisation, and electronic music.’ Eyal Hareuveni, Salt Peanuts [full review]
